Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive surgical treatment of sinusitis and nasal polyps. The procedure may be performed using local anesthesia, with or without sedation.
During FESS, our Dallas Fort Worth ENT specialists use a nasal endoscope (a small telescope) that is inserted through the nostrils. This device allows the surgeon to see inside the nose and sinuses with a special camera attached to the endoscope. The functional endoscopic sinus surgery procedure helps enlarge and clear blocked sinus passages, restoring proper drainage and ventilation.
FESS is a minimally invasive procedure that provides positive, long-lasting results for patients struggling from breathing issues or chronic sinusitis. Patients experience minimal discomfort and there is no external scarring since the entire procedure is done inside the nose. Additionally, there is less removal of tissue, which results in less bleeding and post-operative pain. The use of an endoscope provides a better view of the surgical area, resulting in a lower rate of complications as well.
